Angelo Maria Landi was born in Massa (Tuscany) in 1907, son of an artisan, Giuseppe, and a dressmaker, Giulia Rossi; he was the fifth of ten children. When he was 11 he joined  the local Institute for theory and practical of fine arts. He then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara and, once he moved to Florence, he joined the special painting course at the Accademia where he graduated in 1926. During these years he was a student of Felice Carena (painting), Celestino Celestini (engraving and printing) and Galileo Chini (mural)
